HOW WE'RE HELPING
AFRICA'S LARGEST STUDENT ORGANISATION FIND ITSELF

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Introduction

SASCO is the biggest student movement in Africa. It organizes students in institutions of higher learning who are striving for the transformation of higher learning in order to achieve a non-sexist, non-racial, and unbiased democratic education system.

The challenge.

As competition arose from the EFF and DASO, SASCO found itself needing to transform the way it communicates, inspires and connects with its stakeholders.

From their online presence to their digital media campaigns, SASCO decided to step up to the plate and begin to produce communication materials that are dynamic and engaging. They commissioned Petaltheory® to help them revive their communication stance from their logo (which had no vector-based version of the original) right up to their website (which had not been updated in three years_.

We went even beyond and developed a mobile application for the student movement. Entering the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the brand needed to regain its influence over every sphere of youth culture.

THE NARRATIVE

The first thing we set out to do was to develop a Creative Strategy. The purpose of the strategy was to lay down a foundation from which future marketing collaterals for SASCO will emanate from. The Creative Strategy was also used to give the brand a tone of voice, as well as a manifesto which could creatively direct any future marketing messages.

THE LOGO

Based on the Creative Strategy, we began re-illustrating their logo. Their previous logo was pixelated, unclear, and in low resolution, as there was no single vector-based artwork of the original logo.

The logo needed to be traced and made distinct; it needed to reflect the original sentiment of the emblem, but also convey a professional, clean, and grand style of the design.

THE WEBSITE

The biggest chunk of our project was to develop a mobile-friendly web platform through which the organisation can capture its membership database. For the first time in SASCO history, students could now register for their SASCO membership online. Moreover, the site catered for their weekly publication Moithuti. Through the website alone, SASCO attracted over a 1000 active users a day.

WE LAUNCHED THE FIRST STUDENT ORGANISATION APP IN AFRICA

After developing the website we began building the app. In June 2017, we launched the first student organisation app in Africa: The SASCO App.

Between Android and iOS the app saw an uptake of over a 1000 users in less than a month of its initial launch. To this day, the app enables students to engage with each other, while they receive notifications and update on the latest statement from the leadership of SASCO, right on the App. The response has been overwhelming. The launch of the app energised a sleeping giant and rejuvenated SASCO members to continue championing the interests of students in systems of higher learning. SASCO raised the bar amongst their competition, to which none has been able surpass.
